Boston Rent Control Law (first) is adopted.
November 21, 1969
The ordinance is approved by the Boston City Council and signed by Mayor Kevin White. The first local recent control ordinance in Boston and the first imposition of rent control since the end of World War II, it is described as a “moderate” law that covers 60,000 units, approximately one-fourth of the city’s housing stock. But it exempts buildings with three or fewer units, newly-built or newly-renovated luxury apartment buildings. The law establishes a five-person Rent Appeals Board, and requires landlords to register all of their units with the board and get its approval for any major rent increases. The law is amended in 1970.*
